Japan's nuclear leakage Yantai environment remains normal

The reporter learned that after the nuclear leakage in Japan, the Ministry of Environmental Protection requested coastal environmental protection agencies to strengthen the monitoring of the radiation environment. The provincial Environmental Protection Agency also issued emergency directives, requiring all relevant cities to immediately initiate nuclear accident emergency preparedness and carry out nuclear and radiation emergency monitoring. It sent experts to cities to assist in emergency monitoring.

After receiving the emergency instructions, the Shanghai Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau immediately initiated the Yantai City nuclear and radiation accident emergency response mechanism and nuclear and radiation accident monitoring and protection procedures, and set up an emergency leadership team. The emergency technical team composed of the backbones of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Management Office of the Municipal Environmental Protection Agency and the Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center Station began to conduct 24-hour continuous monitoring of the city’s radiation environment from 9:00 am on March 12. The emergency work team conducts an aggregated analysis of the monitored data every hour. From the current monitoring data, the monitoring data are within the natural background of Yantai City's environment and no abnormalities have occurred.

According to the director of the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Management Office of the Municipal Bureau of Environmental Protection, Miyahama, the main impact of the explosion of the nuclear power unit on the surrounding environment and human health is the damage caused by the large dose of radioactive radiation generated by radionuclides. This kind of radiation damage mainly occurs in explosions. Within a few kilometers of the site; more importantly, it is due to the radioactive dust generated by the explosion. This part of the radioactive dust is inhaled through the breath or deposited in the water source soil and then ingested into the human body. As a result, the smoke inhalation area generally designated in the accident emergency of China's nuclear power plants is five to twenty kilometers, and the radiation impact on the area outside the inhalation control area of smoke plume is minimal. Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi NPP is far away from China, coupled with the current meteorological conditions that are mainly spread to the northeast, and the possibility that the radioactive dust generated by the nuclear power plant’s unit explosion will be transferred to China is very small. The impact of the Japanese nuclear power plant explosion on the radiation environment in the city is almost impossible.

“No abnormalities have been found in the data currently monitored.” Li Tianbo, director of the Center for Nuclear and Radiation Monitoring at the Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center, said that the monitoring included sampling and analysis of aerosols, air iodine, sedimentation ash, soil, and rainwater samples. The continuous monitoring of the gamma air absorbed dose rate involves key factors such as water, gas environment and soil. At present, the monitoring staff has selected ten representative sampling points in the city near Japan, and the measured data are more representative. Sex, monitoring of the data found no abnormalities, the public do not have to panic.

What is natural background radiation?

Human beings are constantly receiving various kinds of natural radiation such as cosmic rays, uranium-238, uranium-235, plutonium-232, potassium-40, and radium-226 that exist in soil, rock, water, and the atmosphere. Irradiation is natural background radiation.

What is smoke plume?

Smoke plume refers to the continuous discharge of smoke from chimneys or exhaust outlets. It looks like smoke and feathers. It is called smoke plume. When an accident occurs at a nuclear power plant, if the smoke plume falls on or is inhaled into the human body, it will cause harm. Smoke plume has a certain range of floatation. According to this, the contingency planning area designated is the tobacco plume emergency plan area.
