At 9:00 am on May 16th, Beijing Zhongguancun International Conference Center, Baidu and Wuhu Municipal People's Government of Anhui Province formally signed a cooperation agreement. The two sides will jointly build a “all-wheelless vehicle operation area†in Wuhu. Pan Chaohui, mayor of Wuhu City, Anhui Province, revealed at the meeting: Baidu is working with Chery to build a fully-automobile car. Yin Tongyue, chairman of Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., said that the first trial vehicles will be provided by Chery.
In an interview with the media, Wang Jin said that the operation area jointly established with the Wuhu Municipal People's Government will gradually expand over time. In the first phase, the fully-automated driving vehicle will be trial-operated in a limited area with simple conditions, and the area will be expanded between 3-5 years, and the city will be demonstrated after five years.
At the signing ceremony, Yin Tongyue sat down in the office as Baidu's automatic driving consultant. When the reporter asked him to verify the source of the operating vehicle, the first phase of the operation area was located near the Chery factory area in Wuhu Development Zone. The first batch of trial vehicles will be provided by Chery, and the number will be 20-30, all of which will reach the fully automatic driving level. At present, the vehicle has completed the automatic driving modification and will be tested on the road.
Regarding the specific ownership of the vehicle, the technical division of labor, the size of the first-stage operation area, when it will start, and the specific operational roles of Baidu, Wuhu Municipal Government and Chery, the site said that it will give more detailed information in the future.
Compared with other companies that enter autopilot, Baidu is the first company to cooperate with local government companies to conduct urban road trial operations. At the end of last year, when the Autopilot Vehicles Division was established, it announced a three-year commercial and five-year mass production plan for fully automatic driving. Baidu's fully-automated driving vehicles will select about 10 commercial operations in different cities and demonstration areas in China in the form of public vehicles. Wang Jin said in an interview that the signing of the operation with the Wuhu Municipal Government also includes a long-term plan for three-year commercial and five-year mass production.
In the future, there will be more Baidu self-driving cars entering the city in a government-enterprise cooperation mode. When Baidu's auto-driving car business unit was established, Wang Chuanfu, the chairman of BYD, who sat in the same position as Yin Tongyue, became the next expectation. Wang Chuanfu himself also said in January this year that it has been working with Baidu to develop autonomous driving cars for two or three months.
As autonomous vehicles begin to enter the stage of engineering and marketization, the city is an ideal scenario for testing in the next phase compared to the large number of closed areas and highway tests at this stage. As far as Baidu is concerned, through the trial operation of the urban environment, more road driving data will be obtained, which will help the rapid iteration technology to be introduced to the market. In addition, the accumulated road test experience will also help Baidu to be closer to the future of self-driving car laws and regulations as well as road and environmental standards.
