In September 2010, Quantachrome Instruments launched the latest thin film aperture analyzer, Porometer 3G.

The instrument is a unique, fully-automated, multi-functional analyzer that measures the pore size and permeability of membranes using infiltrable liquids such as water. Like traditional mercury porosimeters, Porometer 3G also uses the Washburn equation to calculate pore size and permeability. However, because the instrument's testing principle is the bubble pressure method, the use of invasive liquids, such as water, there is no mercury pollution, no laboratory modification, safer and more convenient. At the same time, this method is also a standard method for ASTM thin film measurements. Test principle: The bubble pressure method, ie gas permeation method, is used to measure the pressure change of the invaded sample under the effect of airflow.

This method is also based on the theory that surface tension causes fluid rise in capillary pores. When the capillary pores are immersed in a liquid, the liquid in the pores will rise to a certain height under the action of the surface tension. When the surface tension in the pores and the gravity of the liquid column in the pores reach equilibrium, this This can be used to calculate the membrane pore size and permeability (Washburn equation).
