According to reports, researchers at Northeastern University have built a robot that can do two things at the same time, walking with legs before jumping and flying over short distances to overcome obstacles in its path. The Northwestern University research team called the robot "LEONARDO" (LEgONAerialRoboticDrOne).
Leo is about 2.5 feet (0.8 m) tall and has a "chickenwalker" posture with two slender legs. In order to achieve a good balance between strength and lightness, Leo is mainly made of carbon fiber and weighs only 6 pounds (2.7 kg). In addition, there is a pair of thrusters on both sides of the body, enough to make it fly. Leo doesn't fly in the air like a normal old drone, but it's not really a goal. Instead, Leo's thruster is designed to give it more air time after a jump, let it jump over obstacles and land safely on the other side.
Those thrusters can also help the robot maintain balance. Just five years ago, Boston Power's creepy ATLAS robots were as jealous as drunks – and now they are crossing the woods, turning into “parkour†masters and even backflips like professional athletes. Leo can exhibit similar stability, and if it starts to tilt in one direction, it will open the thruster on one side.
Leo is not necessarily the first robot to walk and fly - a few years ago, the EPFL team built a bat-like robot that could also move on land. But the robot is mainly used as a drone that can crawl, almost the opposite of Leo.
Although LEONARDO is still in its early stages, researchers say that robots like this one day can be used for exploration, including on other planets.
