Solar multi-band tomography is equivalent to CT imaging of the sun by recording simultaneously images of different bands to understand the evolution of solar activity and to enable scientists to make an early warning before any harmful solar activity such as coronal mass ejection can occur. Currently, up to 6-band tomography can be achieved simultaneously in domestic and foreign solar telescopes.

Rao Chang-hui team to break through a number of key technologies, successfully developed a "7-band solar tomography system," as the world's most multi-band tomography imaging system, the detection wavelength were the corresponding sun ball, chromosphere Bottom, mid-chromosphere and chromosphere top.

The obtained solar atmosphere can be seen in the near infrared 7-band simultaneous high-resolution tomography, through the above system and the Yunnan Observatory 1-meter new vacuum solar telescope and 151-element solar adaptive optical system docked to carry out observations.
