Volkswagen Light Commercial Vehicles Launched in Russia in May or Introduced into China and India

Volkswagen plans to launch its light commercial vehicle in Russia in May 2009.

Stephan Schaller, head of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Division, said: "VW plans to increase its market share in Russia from 5% to 10% and sales to 750,000 by 2018. To accelerate this goal, The company has installed the SKD assembly line for the production of T5 and Caddy at the Kaluga plant. The assembly line is expected to be put into use in May this year."

Schaller also added that Volkswagen hopes to establish a production base in China and India and launch its Transporter bread model. At present, the company is considering the feasibility of this project, but has not decided whether to use its existing production capacity or cooperate with local commercial vehicle manufacturers for production.

Although it is expected that the sales of light commercial vehicles will be better than the Transporter bread model, Schaller said that Volkswagen still has the possibility of further cuts in man hours at its factories in Hanover, Germany and Poznan, Poland.

Volkswagen commercial vehicle sales in 2008 were 500,000, up 2.9% year-on-year, total revenue rose 3.3% year-on-year to 9.6 billion euros (about 14.4 billion US dollars), operating profit rose 25% to 375 million euros . However, the company expects that the above three sets of data for commercial vehicles will decline in 2009.
